MBA vs. MS: What's the Difference?

Generalist leadership credential or specialist technical credential — pick on purpose.

What each degree is for

An MBA is a general management degree. The curriculum spans finance, marketing, operations, strategy, accounting and leadership, and the value is as much the network and the signal as the coursework. It suits people moving toward managing functions, budgets and people.

An MS is a specialist degree. Data analytics, finance, nursing, cybersecurity, engineering — depth in one domain, taught by people practicing in it. It suits people who want to be more valuable at the technical work itself.

Admissions and experience

MBA programs usually expect meaningful work experience, and the strongest cohorts average three to seven years. MS programs frequently admit students directly from undergraduate study, and often expect specific prerequisite coursework instead.

Cost and timing

MBAs are generally more expensive and more likely to be employer-sponsored. MS programs are typically shorter and cheaper. If your employer reimburses tuition, ask which degree they fund before you apply — the answer often decides the question.
