Capstone, thesis, or comprehensive exam
Most master's programs end with one of three things. A thesis is original research aimed at contributing to the literature. A capstone is applied: you solve a real problem for a real organization using the methods of your field. A comprehensive exam tests mastery of the coursework.
Thesis tracks suit students heading toward doctoral study. Capstones suit students heading back into practice.
How to choose a topic
The best capstone topic sits where three circles overlap: a problem you have access to, a body of literature that exists, and a scope you can finish in one or two terms. Narrow beats ambitious every time.
How to finish it
Work backward from the submission deadline and place milestones for the proposal, literature review, method, data, analysis and final draft. Schedule writing sessions weekly rather than waiting for a clear block of time that will never arrive.
Keep your faculty chair updated on a fixed cadence. Silence between student and chair is the single best predictor of a delayed graduation.
